Burberry store, Regent St - formerly the New Gallery Cinema
The third Wurlitzer theatre organ to be shipped to the UK was installed in 1925 into the New Gallery Cinema in Lower Regent Street. A very sweet Style F model of 2 manuals and 8 ranks. The organ remained in the building after conversion to a church in the 1950s and was then fully restored when the building became Habitat's flagship store in 2005. In 2011 it changed hands again and is now the premiere store for Burberry. The organ console was moved from where Habitat had it and a new wind line was therefore required for it. Taylor-Hammond became involved around 2014 and installed the wind line, plus have updated the motor starter, wiring and action DC supply unit, which were all very elderly and unlikely to pass any electrical examination.
We continue to look after this historic and very nice organ, giving it regular maintenance each year. Unfortunately Burberry have not used the organ in public as yet, but we are hopeful this will happen in due course.
The photos below give an overview since our involvement.
